A walk in the woods

August 20th, 2008 Peter Korkala

We were out in the woods for a walk this afternoon (between showers). It was really nice - the air is so fresh out in the woods - and you’re almost guaranteed to get some good photos.

View from Bastkärn to Fjällberget

July 17th, 2008 Peter Korkala

This photo is taken from Bastkärn, a tiny, tiny village less than 10 km from my home. The village in the valley is Silverhöjden, another tiny, tiny village here. At the horizon you can see mount Fjällberget, the highest mountain in this area (466 m). The border between my (Ljusnarsberg’s) municipality and the northern neighbor, Ludvika, is somewhere in the forest between Silverhöjden and Fjällberget. The road on the photo is called R50, and is the main road around here. During the winter the trucks are having big problems getting uphill here, at least when it’s snowing.

There are five wind power stations in the Fjällberget area, and they’re planning on building between 15-20 additional wind power stations there. I don’t mind though, I think they’re kind of beautiful to look at, and the energy generated is very environmentally friendly. I have some great (close up) photos in my archive from the construction of these wind power stations, I have to post them here some day.

Heavy rain, Lake Hörken

July 17th, 2008 Peter Korkala

On my way to Grängesberg today I drived  by Lake Hörken. It was raining very much at the moment, so I didn’t want to step out of the car. The picture is taken from inside the car (yes, I stopped at a safe place first).

Here’s a photo I took a couple of minutes ago (about 10:30pm), when I was walking one of our two dogs. It’s not perfect in any way, the sky is overexponated and the trees to the left are unsharp. But it will serve as a first photo taken in the dusk. I will have to practice more, and probably bring the tripod (but not when I’m walking the dog). And as you see the weather got better during the evening.

Malmtorget, Kopparberg

July 17th, 2008 Peter Korkala

Malmtorget, central Kopparberg:

Malmtorget means Ore square in English, it sound’s really strange. :)
Kopparberg is in the middle of an old mining area called Bergslagen, hence the connection to Ore. We’re having many street names and such with connection to the mining industry.

Yesterday we went out on a trip to Grängesberg, another small village about 25 km north of Kopparberg. Here are some photos of Cassel’s Donation in Grängesberg:

The church in Kopparberg

July 10th, 2008 Peter Korkala

The church in Kopparberg was begun in 1635, more than 370 years ago. In February 2006 the church was voted as the most beautiful church in Sweden. The voting was held by a magazine called “Året Runt”. The church’s name isn’t “Kopparbergs kyrka” (kyrka is the swedish word for church) but Ljusnarsbergs Kyrka. Ljusnarsberg is the name of the municipality.

The old courthouse in Kopparberg

July 8th, 2008 Peter Korkala

The house with the clock tower (do you call that a clock tower even if it’s not that heigh?) is the old courthouse of Kopparberg. Kopparberg is the seat of Ljusnarsbergs municipality in which I live - but I live in a tiny, tiny village located 15 km north of Kopparberg. Today the tourist information bureau is located in the old courthouse.

The sky in this photo is very overexposured, but it have to do anyway. I took this photo earlier today when I was in town to make some grocery shopping. (Heres a link to the same photo, but with a better sky, thanks Photoshop.)

Help me improve my English writing

And by the way, please correct me if you find something wrong, or a strange expression, in my posts. One of my purposes with this blog is to get more experience in writing about all and everything in English, and I’ll be glad if you tell me when I type something wrong, (i.e. misspell a word or use the wrong grammar).

If you do that, you’ll help me improve my English writing. Thanks in advance!

View over Lake Vasman

July 4th, 2008 Peter Korkala

Here’s a photo I took last summer (May, 12th, 2007):

The lake is called Vasman, and this photo is taken just outside the town Ludvika, from an old mining fascility. The view from here was stunning!

This is about 35 km from my home. Here are a lot of lakes everywhere.

Sunset at midnight

July 2nd, 2008 Peter Korkala

About one month ago I took this photo on my way home from work. I was working the evening shift, and I believe this photo was taken about 11:30pm. During summer the nights are not that dark here (it’s called White Nights), and further north - above the polar circle - the sun don’t set until sometime in August.
