The Northern mine in Garpenberg - Sky Watch Friday

September 5th, 2008 Peter Korkala

This is my current workplace - the (northern) mine in Garpenberg.

I really love my new job as a diamond core driller! This week was my first week underground in a mine, earlier commissions were above ground.

There are two mines in Garpenberg (both owned by Boliden) - Garpenberg north and Garpenberg south, but in 2004 they were connected under ground (at 800-900 meters). You can go down both by car and by the elevators.

Sky watch Friday - Shades of gray

August 28th, 2008 Peter Korkala

This week’s photo will be a large contrast to last week’s sunset - misty hills on a rainy evening.

Sunset in the woods - Sky Watch Friday

August 21st, 2008 Peter Korkala

Here’s a fresh photo (about one hour old) from today’s sunset in the woods:

Happy Sky Watch Friday everyone! And thanks for all the great comments in my earlier SWF-posts!

If you’re one of my fellow SWF-visitors, why don’t you also take a look at my photo of the Lunar Eclipse the other night? First I was thinking that I should use it as this week’s SWF, but I couldn’t wait to put it up here in my blog…

A walk in the woods

August 20th, 2008 Peter Korkala

We were out in the woods for a walk this afternoon (between showers). It was really nice - the air is so fresh out in the woods - and you’re almost guaranteed to get some good photos.

A very common sight this summer

August 20th, 2008 Peter Korkala

The garden table full of water. It feels like it has rained all summer, with very few exceptions.

Lunar Eclipse

August 17th, 2008 Peter Korkala

I almost missed tonight’s lunar eclipse, but thanks to a local newsfeed (Wighsnews) about the lunar eclipse I managed to get some photos of it.

Lunar Eclipse - 1/25, F13, 55 mm. Cropped.

I tried both with long and short shutter speeds, but with the long ones the photo was way to light (and with that, the eclipse was gone).

I really want to have another lense, I’d love to have a fast, good zoom lense, but they are very expensive… But someday… :)

Sky Watch Friday

August 15th, 2008 Peter Korkala

Long time no see… But here’s this weeks Sky Watch Friday:

It’s taken this week with my cell phone at the Swedish east coast (by the Baltic Sea).

Sky watch Friday - Polar stratospheric clouds

August 1st, 2008 Peter Korkala

This Sky Watch Friday is from last week - I put up the wrong link in the Sky Wath Friday-comment… This weeks SWF is found here. But you may want to look at this too… :)

This Friday’s Sky Watch Friday photos will be from my archive (I think that’s Ok?), more specific from January 25, 2008. This day I saw a strange phenomena that i’ve never seen before - clouds called Polar stratospheric clouds (read about them on Wikipedia).

They are very impressing, and I took a lot of photos!

I think I need to say that the photos are not Photoshopped, only resized.

Sunset at the Hammarsund bridge

July 27th, 2008 Peter Korkala

Today when I drove to my job I took a detour of about 15 km, and passed the Hammarsund Bridge just about sunset. These are some of the around 100 photos I took:

The bridge is located at the northern tip of Sweden’s second largest lake, lake Vättern.

I can say that it was definitely worth the extra fifteen kilometers to get these photos! And the road on this way is much better (not as curvy and hilly as the shorter way), which is a nice bonus.

Sky watch Friday - Vasselhyttan

July 26th, 2008 Peter Korkala

Here’s my contribution to the Sky Watch Friday - a bit late but anyway…

I took the photo on my way home yesterday, in Vasselhyttan (a tiny village).

After the thunderstorm

July 22nd, 2008 Peter Korkala

The central parts of Kopparberg. The red house to the left is the police station.

I took this through my windscreen, but it’s rather good anyway. I love the strong colors and the contrast against the dark sky.

Photos from a country walk (updated)

July 19th, 2008 Peter Korkala

I took a country walk this afternoon, to get more practice with my new camera. These photos passed my “quality check”:

I love photos with unsharp background - “bokeh” (that’s a Japanese word, huh?)

Harebells. They are very common around here.

A butterfly of unknown species. This photo is cropped.

I’ve investigasted a bit more about the species of the butterfly, and it seems to be a Queen of Spain Fritillary (Issoria lathonia). In Swedish it’s called Storfläckig pärlemorfjäril.

Two beetles on a common daisy. This photo is a bit unsharp, so it really didn’t pass my quality check, but I’ll throw it in here anyway.

My first Sky Watch Friday

July 18th, 2008 Peter Korkala

This is my first contribution to Sky Watch Friday:

The old Court House in Kopparberg (see more pictures of it here).

Update:

I took a photo of the rainbow a couple of minutes ago (actually it’s two rainbows), and since it’s Sky Watch Friday I have to put it here, of course:

View from Bastkärn to Fjällberget

July 17th, 2008 Peter Korkala

This photo is taken from Bastkärn, a tiny, tiny village less than 10 km from my home. The village in the valley is Silverhöjden, another tiny, tiny village here. At the horizon you can see mount Fjällberget, the highest mountain in this area (466 m). The border between my (Ljusnarsberg’s) municipality and the northern neighbor, Ludvika, is somewhere in the forest between Silverhöjden and Fjällberget. The road on the photo is called R50, and is the main road around here. During the winter the trucks are having big problems getting uphill here, at least when it’s snowing.

There are five wind power stations in the Fjällberget area, and they’re planning on building between 15-20 additional wind power stations there. I don’t mind though, I think they’re kind of beautiful to look at, and the energy generated is very environmentally friendly. I have some great (close up) photos in my archive from the construction of these wind power stations, I have to post them here some day.
