Heavy rain, Lake Hörken

July 17th, 2008 Peter Korkala

On my way to Grängesberg today I drived  by Lake Hörken. It was raining very much at the moment, so I didn’t want to step out of the car. The picture is taken from inside the car (yes, I stopped at a safe place first).

Here’s a photo I took a couple of minutes ago (about 10:30pm), when I was walking one of our two dogs. It’s not perfect in any way, the sky is overexponated and the trees to the left are unsharp. But it will serve as a first photo taken in the dusk. I will have to practice more, and probably bring the tripod (but not when I’m walking the dog). And as you see the weather got better during the evening.

Todays weather at noon: hail, rain and +13 degrees C:

I hope it’ll be better soon, I want to go for a ride and take some photos - but I don’t want to bring my new camera out in this weather…

Malmtorget, Kopparberg

July 17th, 2008 Peter Korkala

Malmtorget, central Kopparberg:

Malmtorget means Ore square in English, it sound’s really strange. :)
Kopparberg is in the middle of an old mining area called Bergslagen, hence the connection to Ore. We’re having many street names and such with connection to the mining industry.

Panned photos

July 16th, 2008 Peter Korkala

I tried an interesting technique with my new camera today: panning.

My old camera was too slow to manage this, but the EOS 450 is able to take 3.5 photos/sec and that’s really good. A lot of the photos were blurred all over, but some of them were pretty good (photos linked from my Swedish blog):

1/80, F11, ISO200, 25 mm

The same photo, but I cropped it down a bit:

Another one:

1/80, F7.1, ISO200, 51 mm

And the last one for today:

1/125, F7.1, ISO200, 42 mm.

I almost filled up my 2 GB card today - lucky me that I ordered a 8 GB SDHC yesterday! The files are very big, between 15-20 MB each (I’m saving them in RAW-format), and my 2 GB card can only hold around 120 photos. The new 8 GB card can hold between 550 and 600 RAW-photos, and with the 2 GB card as a backup in my (new!) photobag I think it’ll be enough - but you’ll never know…

I have a lot to learn about the camera, but it’s very fun! And I love the thought of getting additional lenses some day. I would love to have a 300 mm zoom lens, and a wide angle lens (maybe 10-15 mm). And then I would like to have a very light sensitive lens to take photos of the moon and the stars, but they’re very expensive.

A first photo with the new camera

OK, here’s a first test, taken with my new Canon EOS 450:

There is really a LOT to learn, but it’s very funny!

July 11th, 2008 Peter Korkala

Yesterday we went out on a trip to Grängesberg, another small village about 25 km north of Kopparberg. Here are some photos of Cassel’s Donation in Grängesberg:

The church in Kopparberg

July 10th, 2008 Peter Korkala

The church in Kopparberg was begun in 1635, more than 370 years ago. In February 2006 the church was voted as the most beautiful church in Sweden. The voting was held by a magazine called “Året Runt”. The church’s name isn’t “Kopparbergs kyrka” (kyrka is the swedish word for church) but Ljusnarsbergs Kyrka. Ljusnarsberg is the name of the municipality.

The old courthouse in Kopparberg

July 8th, 2008 Peter Korkala

The house with the clock tower (do you call that a clock tower even if it’s not that heigh?) is the old courthouse of Kopparberg. Kopparberg is the seat of Ljusnarsbergs municipality in which I live - but I live in a tiny, tiny village located 15 km north of Kopparberg. Today the tourist information bureau is located in the old courthouse.

The sky in this photo is very overexposured, but it have to do anyway. I took this photo earlier today when I was in town to make some grocery shopping. (Heres a link to the same photo, but with a better sky, thanks Photoshop.)

Help me improve my English writing

And by the way, please correct me if you find something wrong, or a strange expression, in my posts. One of my purposes with this blog is to get more experience in writing about all and everything in English, and I’ll be glad if you tell me when I type something wrong, (i.e. misspell a word or use the wrong grammar).

If you do that, you’ll help me improve my English writing. Thanks in advance!

Rainy day

July 7th, 2008 Peter Korkala

Today I woke up to a cold, rainy day. The thermometer tells me to not wear shorts today, +8 degrees C is not warm. The rain is pouring down. Welcome to an ordinary Swedish summer day.

This is a view from my kitchen window, looking towards the main road.

Sunset at midnight

July 2nd, 2008 Peter Korkala

About one month ago I took this photo on my way home from work. I was working the evening shift, and I believe this photo was taken about 11:30pm. During summer the nights are not that dark here (it’s called White Nights), and further north - above the polar circle - the sun don’t set until sometime in August.
