The Northern mine in Garpenberg - Sky Watch Friday

September 5th, 2008 Peter Korkala Posted in Photo, sky_watch_friday |

This is my current workplace - the (northern) mine in Garpenberg.

I really love my new job as a diamond core driller! This week was my first week underground in a mine, earlier commissions were above ground.

There are two mines in Garpenberg (both owned by Boliden) - Garpenberg north and Garpenberg south, but in 2004 they were connected under ground (at 800-900 meters). You can go down both by car and by the elevators.

  10. what a great photo! Are you down in a mine all day? The sky must look so beautiful after that…

  11. The building seems to be very very big. Nice snap.

  12. lovely shot and super interesting job I would be terrified to be under the ground like that but I bet it is much bigger and lighter than my imagination allows :)

  13. Thanks everyone!

Donald - Yes it was! And when they were connected they had a big party under ground.

Øyvind - Yes, I’m very satisfied with my new job. So much better than at the brewery I was earlier (as a supervisor at the filling lines).

Mary - Yes, I’m working around eight to ten hours per day under ground, Monday to Thursday. And you don’t know how the weather is when you’re down there, it will be a surprise when you come up after the work is done. Down in the mine the temperature is around 15-20 degrees C, no matter what the weather is above ground, and no matter if it’s summer or winter.

pantteri - Yes it’s big! I don’t know how big it is though…

Laura - Yes, I think it’s very interesting! It’s very big under ground, around 6 m from floor to ceiling everywhere. And there are A LOT of tunnels in every direction. There is even a fire station under ground!

  14. great photo. you captured so much in the picture. the sky is just perfect

  15. This is really a nice shot. I love the color of the sky. I wouldn’t want to work underground but neither would I want to climb these structures!
